Ingredients

For the Cake
  • 1.5 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup butter; salted at room temperature
  • 4 large whole eggs at room temperature
  • 2.5 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 0.75 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup whole buttermilk
For the Glaze
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3-4 Tbsp heavy whipping cream to desire consistency

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a bundt cake pan generously with butter and flour.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, beat granulated sugar and butter together until light and fluffy.
  3. Incorporate the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Pour in the vanilla extract and combine until smooth.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, ground nutmeg, and a pinch of salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter into the prepared bundt pan, smoothing the top with a spatula.
  2. Place in the oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  3. Once baked, remove from the oven and let cool in the pan for about 15 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.
Glazing
  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together powdered sugar and heavy whipping cream until smooth. Adjust the cream for desired consistency.
  2. Once the cake has cooled completely, drizzle the glaze over the top, allowing it to cascade down the sides.

Notes

For best results, use fresh buttermilk. If unavailable, create a substitute by adding a tablespoon of vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk.
